Thailand: Bangkok

We scheduled a quick stop in Bangkok on our way to Phuket, Thailand.  We caught up with some of B.'s friends, rode in our first tuk-tuk, toured the Grand Palace, saw several wats, watched The Hangover Part II and visited the Sky Bar, went to a ladyboy show, and ate some delicious Thai food.  After several weeks in China, it was comforting to be back in a country where the signs, while still incomprehensible, were written in an alphabetic language!

Inside our first tuk-tuk

I don't have the words to describe the Grand Palace; my photos can't begin to do it justice.  The palace complex covers over 218,000 square meters and was home to the Thai (originally Siamese) king and royal government for nearly 150 years.  While the Thai royal family now lives elsewhere, the palace is still used for official functions.  Building after building, wall after wall, statue after statue -- it's all intricately decorated with gold and jewels and bright colors.  I short-circuited when trying to capture both its scale and complexity.
